This was Limmud 2011

This was the third Conference and in 2011 our home was the Hotel Hunor in Old-Buda: for the 162 participants the usual Limmud atmosphere was complemented in a way by the former workers’ hostel, its brick tent and other ancient Hungarian symbols.

Communities were the centre theme and the key words of the 2011 programme read: “Here– Hungarian Jewish communities”, “Elsewhere – Jewish communities abroad”, “Differently – Jews and other Others” and “OK, but how?”. We had everything: interfaith roundtable discussion, film, theatre play being read, music, (trans)sex and even some Israeli elite units (unfortunately not ’live’, only in pictures).

Not only the presenters (though Limmud hasn’t got just presenters) but the participants also came from around the world. Apart from the geographical diversity, Limmud may also have succeeded in showing many different ways of living one’s Jewish identity: from the Reform communities to Orthodoxy, from secular Zionism to Jewish sports.
