Jews and Wine – A glimpse at the history of halakhah

Based on rabbinic texts, this study session will provide a brief overview of the laws of kosher wine. We will discuss the status of wine made or touched by non-Jews, and look at how rabbinic attitudes and priorities changed over time from the Mishnah to the modern sources.

We will explore and try to understand through the traditional Jewish sources the uniqueness of Avraham, the founder and prototype of the Jewish people: why was he chosen by God, what is the significance of that choice, and what are its implications to contemporary society.

Wilderness: The Symbolism of Matan Torah – interactive text study

Why was the Torah given in the wilderness? What does the image of the desert symbolize? How else could it have been? In this session we will be looking at rabbinic texts, old and modern, as well as our own personal responses, to try to find an answer to these questions.

Understanding Shabbat – Tradition and Textual Plasticity

We will investigate the critical idea of melacha as it is expressed in Biblical text and Rabbinic literature in order to understand how Halakha evolves and changes. We will discover why we need Shabbat now more than ever.
